We are happy to announce an 8 week course specifically designed for the talented high school singer interested in pursuing their vocal studies. After more than 10 years working together for Manhattan School of Music’s precollege opera workshop, Assistant Dean/Opera Producer Emeritus, teacher and stage director Gordon Ostrowski and music director/vocal coach/pedagogue LeAnn Overton team up once again to share their expertise with this enthusiastic age group.
These two hour sessions will introduce basic skills required for today’s singer such as: how to build a character through text and subtext, where to find good word by word translations, how to investigate the musical setting to amplify the words and emotions and how to employ points of focus. Gordon will introduce basic stage comportment including moving 18th Century period movement and explication of style. We will provide informative handouts for the singer to take home on a variety of pertinent topics such as efficient practicing, maintaining vocal health, how to memorize, a singer’s self inventory, a valuable bibliography of books on artsong and operatic literature, and how to investigate a piece of music.
We will also devote a class to audition techniques and stage mock auditions. The auditions will be videoed and evaluated. Parents are invited to an informative discussion of current requirements for today’s college applications and get a sense of today’s business.
Applications are due December 11, 2017. Open the application here and return to Gordon Ostrowski for the application form at: email@example.com with a headshot, resume and a letter of recommendation from a trusted musical source.
